Canelo Alvarez conquered the super middleweight division one champion at a time. Callum Smith. Billy Joe Saunders. Caleb Plant. By the end of his run to undisputed, Canelo had established himself as the pound-for-pound king of boxing. But there was one challenger he never faced. David Benavidez. Known as “The Mexican Monster,” Benavidez built his reputation through relentless pressure, brutal combinations and dominant performances against some of the division’s biggest names. After dismantling Caleb Plant and stopping former world champion Demetrius Andrade, the demand for Canelo vs Benavidez became impossible to ignore. But instead of facing Benavidez, Canelo continued down a different path, taking fights against Jermell Charlo and Edgar Berlanga while Benavidez waited for his opportunity. Eventually, Benavidez stopped waiting and moved up to light heavyweight, continuing his destructive run against Anthony Yarde. For years, Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez felt like one of the biggest fights boxing could make. Now the question is whether it will ever happen at all. Was Canelo avoiding David Benavidez? And if they had fought at 168 pounds, who would have won? Let us know in the comments below.
