October 1995. Eight fighters. One tournament. Almost no rules. Before modern MMA had fully taken shape, the World Combat Championship brought together boxers, judokas, Muay Thai fighters, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, Savate fighters, and other martial artists inside one brutal tournament in North Carolina. The prize was $120,000. But the real experiment was much bigger: Which fighting style would survive when there was nowhere left to hide? Renzo Gracie entered the tournament representing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Across the bracket were powerful strikers, experienced grapplers, world-class athletes, and fighters with completely different ideas about how a fight should be won. The night became a chaotic collision of styles. Judo against Brazilian Vale Tudo. Muay Thai against submission grappling. Boxing against Savate. Striking against grappling. And eventually, one of the most important matchups of the night: BJJ vs Boxing. Renzo Gracie was giving up both height and weight, but once the fight reached the ground, everything changed. This is the story of one of the wildest forgotten tournaments of the 1990s — a tournament that showed the world why mixed martial arts could never be understood by looking at just one fighting style. Before MMA became what it is today, nights like this helped shape its future.
