Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Alkaline Fuel Cells. Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter examines the main aspects, characteristics, and components of alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). AFCs employ an electrolyte composed of potassium hydroxide, which is highly concentrated. These fuel cells operate at relatively low temperatures, ranging from 65 to 200 degrees Celsius. The lecturer states that AFCs require very pure hydrogen due to their low working temperatures, which necessitates the use of expensive catalysts, such as platinum and palladium. Despite such costs, alkaline fuel cells offer high efficiency, particularly in the anode's oxidation process, and allow for flexibility in operation. They are also compact, which has led to their use in space programs by NASA. However, these fu

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Direct Methanol Fuel Cells. Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the challenges and potential solutions related to the use of hydrogen and methanol in fuel cells, particularly focusing on the suitability of methanol as an alternative fuel. Highlighting that although hydrogen has its benefits, it comes with significant drawbacks involving storage, transport, and safety due to its gaseous state and explosive characteristics. The presenter proposes that using liquid alcohols like methanol and ethanol can alleviate some of these issues as they are easier to store and handle at room temperature. Methanol is suggested as a preferable alternative for fuel cells, owing to its liquid state at room temperature, posing fewer risks and s

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Ovepotentials. Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the loss of efficiency in fuel cells due to various types of overpotentials. The first type of overpotential mentioned is activation polarization, which occurs at low current densities and requires extra energy, known as activation energy, for electrochemical reactions to begin. This is followed by ionic polarization, which arises due to resistances within the cell's components and affects the cell at intermediate current densities. Lastly, concentration polarization is explained to occur at very high current densities, where the rapid reactions create a concentration gradient that hinders the access of fuel molecules to the reaction surface, thus requiring more energy for the reactions to

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Applications of Fuel Cells. Descripción automática: In this video, the speaker discusses the diverse applications and considerations for fuel cell technology. Initially, they stress the importance of exploring new uses and markets for fuel cells, highlighting their current deployment in military portable energy, specialty industry, and transportation. The presentation covers the variation in fuel cell efficiency, energy density, and lifespan, noting that operational temperature significantly impacts material durability. Different countries' involvement in fuel cell projects is mentioned, with a few concrete examples provided, including Spain's specific engagement. The speaker moves on to elaborate on the suitability of differe

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Fuels. Hydrogen. Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the potential and challenges of hydrogen as a fuel, particularly in fuel cells. They highlight hydrogen's advantages, such as its environmental benefits—it produces only water when used in fuel cells, without harmful emissions. Additionally, hydrogen can act as an energy vector, enabling the storage and delivery of renewable energy. The video also outlines significant drawbacks, including storage issues due to hydrogen's low density, the risks of explosive mixtures, and the challenges in safely delivering hydrogen. Moreover, the presenter notes that hydrogen does not occur naturally in a usable form and requires energy-intensive production methods, hence its cost-effectiveness and sustainability dep

Título: Classification criteria Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the technological applications of fuel cells, emphasizing their efficiency in converting chemical energy into electrical energy. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that allow for high efficiency and yield, especially when compared to traditional operations. However, when scaling up for use in power plants, multiple fuel cells must be associated into stacks and connected in series or parallel to increase voltage and power density to meet higher energy demands. The video explores the various operations needed before and after the fuel cell process, including fuel processing and energy management. A variety of fuels, such as natural gas, methanol, and particularly hydrogen (which requires additional processing to achieve a rich hydrogen stream), can be supplied to fuel cells. The presenter explains the importance of fuel pretreatment to remove impurities that could poison the catalysts and e

(2010). Transport in PEMFC. Descripción automática: In this video, the speaker provides an overview of transport mechanisms in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and the importance of these processes for the cell's efficiency. They discuss how hydrogen, which acts as fuel, is oxidized at the anode to produce protons and electrons. While electrons create an external electric current, protons move through the electrolyte to the cathode, where they combine with oxygen to form water. The video emphasizes the central role of proton transport through the electrolyte, detailing that any delay in this process can slow down the entire power generation cycle. Consequently, understanding and optimizing the electrolyte's structure is critical to improving fuel cell performance. The speaker mentions Nafion as the most commonly

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells. Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), highlighting their significance and components including ion-exchange membranes that serve as electrolytes. The focus is on the functionality of the polymeric proton exchange membrane, which separates the anode from the cathode and facilitates the movement of protons, generating electricity. The lecture touches on the operational parameters for PEMFCs, stating the need for low-temperature operation due to polymer degradation at high temperatures. It also discusses the challenge of cell poisoning, necessitating the use of pure hydrogen for oxidation. Furthermore, the presenter explains the cell's structure: the polyme

Ribes Greus, MD. (2010). Fuels. Descripción automática: In this video, the speaker gives an overview of the types of fuels that can be used in fuel cells, predominantly focusing on their application, environmental impact, and practical considerations. Fuel cells are described as electrochemical devices that produce energy through redox reactions involving a fuel and an oxidant, typically oxygen. The most common fuel discussed is hydrogen due to its favorable energy density and environmental impact, producing only water upon oxidation. However, the speaker acknowledges the challenges associated with hydrogen storage and safety concerns, such as the need for large volumes, the expense of liquefaction, and flammability risks. Alternatives to hydrogen are explored, with alcohols like methanol and ethanol highlighted as promising options becau
