Welcome back to SumoSpirit! In the last 48 hours, the sumo world has been turned upside down. Yokozuna Onosato, Yokozuna Hoshoryu, and kadoban Ozeki Aonishiki have ALL withdrawn from the Natsu Basho 2026 — leaving the grand sumo tournament without a single active yokozuna competing on the dohyō for the first time in years. In this video, we break down exactly what happened, what each injury means, and why Aonishiki's withdrawal is the most devastating of them all. We cover the full timeline: Onosato's chronic shoulder injury dating back to Kyushu, Aonishiki's catastrophic ankle injury during training at Arashio stable against Wakamotoharu, and Hoshoryu's stunning Day 1 loss to Takayasu followed by his immediate kyujo announcement. Then we dive into the four real contenders for the Emperor's Cup with the top three out: Kirishima the comeback favorite, Wakatakakage making a statement, the 40-year-old Takayasu chasing his first ever yūshō, and the struggling Ozeki Kotozakura. Plus sumo predictions for Nagoya and what this chaos means for Aonishiki's path back to ozeki rank and his European Yokozuna dream. If you love sumo wrestling, follow every basho, and want the deepest sumo analysis on YouTube, you're in the right place. SumoSpirit brings you daily coverage of every grand sumo tournament, breakdowns of the biggest sumo news, and honest takes on Aonishiki, Hoshoryu, Onosato, Kirishima, and every top rikishi in 2026.
