Athletes playing defense need to be able to strategically track the opponent’s offensive attack. In the second of three drill demonstrations on the topic, Tama Miyashiro, former Assistant Coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team, guides coaches through the “Over-the-Net Pepper” drill, with special focus on eyework for the passers/diggers. Miyashiro emphasizes the importance, depending on the level of your athletes, in providing frequent cues regarding setters’ and hitters’ body positions to read the attack. Instructions to give athletes to start the drill and how to provide useful feedback during the drill are demonstrated with its execution. 0:00 – Introduction 0:28 – Drill Overview: Over the Net Pepper 1:10 – Purpose of the Drill 2:00 – Player Setup and Court Positioning 3:05 – How the Drill Works 4:20 – Live Demonstration 6:00 – Key Ball Control and Passing Focus 7:25 – Common Mistakes and Adjustments 8:45 – How This Drill Translates to Match Play 10:00 – Coaching Takeaways
