Título: New architectural materials and their selection Descripción: Introduction to new architectural materials for sustainability through life cyccle analysis Orozco Messana, J. (2017). New architectural materials and their selection. Descripción automática: In this video, a lecture on the Smart Sustainable Cities program is presented, focusing on the role of materials in architecture and their relevance within the physical transition of urban environments. The importance of choosing sustainable materials for architectural design is stressed, highlighting the evolution from intuitive material use pre-industrial revolution to the sophisticated, polymers-enabled design possibilities of contemporary times. The speaker discusses the increasing complexity of modern materials and the need for architects to consider various requirements, leading to the assembly of hybrid materials tailored to specific needs. The lecture emphasizes the potential of material reassembly in achieving sustainabi

Título: Open space vegetation structure Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the relationship between open space vegetation structure and the functionalities of green infrastructure in sustainable city modeling. The focus is on characterizing vegetation structure, particularly that of trees, which are primary components of green infrastructure. The presenter covers methods for describing infrastructures and measuring various tree characteristics. The video includes a brief introduction and then illustrates the process of tree measurement, including factors like tree diameter at breast height (DBH), the height from the base to the living crown (HCBLC), and the crown radius. It explains in detail how to measure the DBH using tapes or calipers and how to use tools like the laser-based hypsometer to measure tree height. A section of the video is devoted to describing the measurement of the spacing between trees in parks and streets, and how to approach assessing t

Título: Built environment Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses sustainable smart building practices within the context of a built environment sub-model. The analysis covers architectural systems, limitations, and introduces building typologies that highlight passive systems and functional integration for future smart cities. Particular attention is given to structural constraints that impact sustainability. The video delves into the evolution of building techniques, from traditional post and lintel to modern systems, and discusses foundational sub-systems like enclosures and supports. Building materials like concrete, timber, and steel are evaluated in terms of their sustainability, embodied energy, and impact during construction. The narrative then shifts to address passive system strategies for thermal comfort, such as window insulation, air tightness, and solar analysis. The incorporation of passive cooling, natural ventilation, and building shape to enhanc

Título: Green infrastructure. Introduction Descripción automática: In this video, a lecturer at a polytechnic university provides an overview of green infrastructure. She breaks down her presentation into five parts, starting with the definition of green infrastructure, its components, origins, and the concept of multi-functionality within its framework. She emphasizes the versatility of green infrastructure, explaining its implementation at various scales from regional to local, and lists examples such as reserves, parks, wetlands, and urban green spaces. The lecturer traces the origins of green infrastructure back to 19th-century planning and conservation theories focused on the benefits of linking parks and natural areas. Multi-functionality is presented as a key aspect, with green spaces serving multiple purposes and offering ecosystem services, illustrated by a public garden serving various roles from cooling the air to providing recreational space. The video concludes with the le

Título: Architectural materials Descripción automática: In this video, the speaker introduces a module on architectural materials within a blended learning course called Essence, which is part of the Erasmus class project focused on physical transition in architecture. The module delves into the analysis of material families and their application in different architectural subsystems, such as foundations, walls, and facilities. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of traditional materials and the development of sustainable solutions for material selection. The lecture covers how architectural subsystems, each with unique constraints, must integrate with an overall design concept, including aesthetic factors like lines, colors, and lighting. These choices affect both the function and perception of spaces within a building. The practical requirements for long-term support, environmental protection, thermal and humidity control, and service provision are all considered when sele

Título: Life cycle analysis Descripción automática: In this video, the instructor introduces the life cycle analysis submodule within the overall module for the physical transition in the "Essence Blended Learning Course for a Sustainable Future in Sustainable Cities." The discussion emphasizes the importance of life cycle analysis for cities and buildings, considering their entire lifespan, with a city cited as an example due to its history of over two thousand years. The instructor outlines the ISO standard definition of life cycle analysis (LCA), as a method used to assess environmental impacts associated with products, buildings, or cities by analyzing relevant inputs and outputs. The video goes on to mention different elements to be considered in a city's life cycle, such as material usage from raw state to final waste management or recycling. It delves into the LCA analysis chain, highlighting the significance of embodied energy and the influence of transport elements. Quantitati

Título: Health and social benefits of green infrastructure Descripción automática: In this video, the presenter discusses the health and social benefits of green infrastructure, which are categorized into six main areas: aesthetic enhancement, health benefits, sustainable mobility, recreational opportunities, food production, and economic advantages. It is noted that vegetation improves city attractiveness and can have several positive effects on health, such as relaxation, stress reduction, cognitive development, and recovery from mental fatigue. Research by Ulrich, the Kaplans, and Taylor et al. is cited to support these claims, particularly the association between exposure to green spaces and improved cognitive development in children. Green infrastructure also encourages physical activity, as studies have shown a correlation between the proximity to green areas and increased outdoor time and exercise. Furthermore, the network of green spaces can promote sustainable transportation a
