Most MMA fighters are taught to keep their hands high, protect their chin, and maintain a defensive stance. But Katsunori Kikuno followed a completely different philosophy. Instead of adopting the conventional MMA guard, this Japanese fighter brought the principles of traditional Okinawan Karate into the cage. He stood upright, kept his hands unusually low, and relied on precision, timing, and techniques that looked completely out of place in modern MMA. His fighting style was built around Okinawan Kenpo, including the unusual Chisen-tai stance, the devastating Mikazuki-geri crescent kick, and the traditional Meotode principle of coordinated hand movements. To many observers, his approach looked risky. But Kikuno believed that proper distance, timing, and relaxed movement could turn unconventional techniques into dangerous weapons. From his Judo background and karate training under Yoshimichi Shingaki to his appearances inside the UFC Octagon, Kikuno remained committed to his traditional fighting identity. He wasn't trying to look like every other MMA fighter. He wanted to show the world what Okinawan Karate could bring to modern combat sports. So, was his unusual fighting style a forgotten martial arts treasure—or a dangerous gamble inside the cage? Watch the story of Katsunori Kikuno, the fighter who brought an entirely different kind of Karate into MMA. Would you feel comfortable fighting with your hands this low? Let us know in the comments.
