What happens when a martial art is designed not to win points, but to survive a real fight? Japanese Jujutsu has a side that most people rarely see. Behind its throws, joint locks, and seemingly simple movements are techniques that can be extremely dangerous—and some are considered too risky for modern combat sports. When Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner Josh Beam decided to experience Japanese Jujutsu firsthand, he initially questioned whether these traditional techniques could really be as effective as they appeared. Then he felt them himself. From devastating leg locks and wrist controls to dangerous neck and shoulder manipulations, and even the infamous Kani Sutemi, Japanese Jujutsu reveals a fighting philosophy built around controlling an opponent before they have the chance to fight back. But the real story goes much deeper. Traditional Japanese Jujutsu was shaped by an era when samurai combat was a matter of survival. There were no judges, no points, and no safety rules designed to protect athletes. The objective was simple: neutralize the threat. That history helps explain why techniques involving vulnerable joints and other sensitive areas developed such a brutal reputation—and why many techniques eventually disappeared from modern competitive martial arts such as Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is the side of Japanese Jujutsu that modern combat sports rarely show. But is Japanese Jujutsu really as dangerous as its reputation suggests? Watch until the end and decide for yourself.
