Título: Examples on composition with the Harmonic Wheel Descripción: The Harmonic Wheel allows us to easily make chord progressions following the Béla Bartók¿s Axis System or the John Coltrane Changes, as well as, of course, in a Cycle of Fifths. In this presentation, an example on composition for each of those types is explained. Nuño Fernández, L. (2016). Examples on composition with the Harmonic Wheel. Título: Example of a composition: Form AB Descripción: This simple composition is made by using several phrases with a similar structure to form the first section. Then, a second section is created in a different key, which requires a Modulation. The harmonization is performed with the Harmonic Wheel by using, apart from the basic chords associated to the considered key, other chords such as the secondary dominants. Nuño Fernández, L. (2017). Título: Example of a composition: Phrase Descripción: Firstly, the Binary Form is explained, which corresponds to a very simple composition. Then, the concept of Motif is explained and used to create a first 8 bar phrase. Next, the Harmonic Wheel is used for harmonizing the phrase. Finally, several rhythmic patterns suitable for that phrase are presented. Nuño Fernández, L. (2017). Example of a composition: Phrase. Título: John Coltrane changes Descripción: John Coltrane Changes are progressions of 3 chords a Major third apart. The chords are connected by means of Dominant Seventh chords. Supposedly, one of the chords has the Tonic function, another the Dominant and the other the Subdominant. But, due to the perfect symmetry among them, the Tonic reference is lost. Thus, the 3 chords become completely equivalent. Representing these chord progressions on the Harmonic Wheel is very simple: they always follow a spiral line. Nuño Fernández, L. (2016). Título: Bela Bartok's axis system Descripción: For any given Key, the Béla Bartók¿s axis system allows us to clasify the 24 Major and minor chords into 3 groups of 8 chords: one group having the Tonic function, another the Dominant function and the other the Subdominant function. The 8 chords in each group are found by looking for relative and parallel chords from a starting chord. Representing those groups on the Harmonic Wheel is very simple: each of them takes up a circular sector. Nuño Fernández, L. (2016). Bela Bartok's axis system. Título: Pop and Rock Harmony Descripción: Pop and Rock songs represent most of the so-called Commercial Music. Therefore, knowing their basic characteristics is of great importance for composers. From a set of representative songs, a statistical analysis is carried out, which takes into account the types of chords used, their position (root or inverted) and the added notes (seventh, ninth, etc.), as well as the mode (major o minor) and the harmonic complexity of the songs. In the latter case, a distinction is made among: Main Chords, Diatonic Chords, Secondary Dominant Chords and Modal Interchange Chords. Finding these chords in any key is performed with the Harmonic Wheel, which greatly simplifies this task. Nuño Fernández, L. (2016). Pop and Rock Harmony. Título: Modulation: Pivot Chords Descripción: Modulation consists in changing from one key to another. Diatonic modulation is performed by using a pivot chord (which is common to the initial and final keys), followed by a cadence to affirm the new key. Obtaining the pivot chords with the common procedure is a laborious task. In this presentation, a new procedure is introduced by using the Harmonic Wheel, which is extremely fast and easy, as will be shown. Nuño Fernández, L. (2016). Modulation: Pivot Chords. Título: The Harmonic Wheel Descripción: First, the 3 basic principles in Western music are summarized. Then, they are graphically represented in a completely logical way. A new representation of notes, chords and keys is thus obtained, which is called Harmonic Wheel. This representation provides a complete and panoramic view of all relationships among the keys, not only those included in the traditional cycle of fifths, but also those involving the relative and parallel keys. This is the so-called Map of the Keys. Additionally, a Chord Finder is implemented for the Major and minor scales (natural, harmonic and melodic). Nuño Fernández, L. (2015). The Harmonic Wheel.
